I want to quit the rat race – quit being part of 9-5. I was going to work everyday, not enjoying my work. I was caught up – I hated the travel, doing work that I didn’t enjoy. It was one of those days on my way to way, that I will make making a commitment to quit the rat race and live my life with a purpose.
I needed to quit. But I couldn’t just walk out with nothing to move into. I had kids, a mortgage and bills to pay. So I started planning. Every evening I would sit down and instead of being a couch potato I started to with my research, how I can earn money to sustain myself, at the same time live a life that I want to. Those were the days, I never wasted any time. During my travel to work, I would be listening to a podcast or during lunch breaks reading up a blog. I have to find a way.
This article is a culmination of everything I learnt and my journey to self-sustain myself. I had no spare money, so I had to do everything myself. I am giving everything for you on a platter.
When it comes to making money online I had a lot of options at my disposal. Frankly, it was overwhelming just choosing an online business type to run with. There are blogs, niche sites, selling your freelancing services, and on and on. Finally, I narrowed it down to becoming an Amazon Affiliate.
We cover everything you need to know to start your very own profitable Amazon affiliate website. This is your ULTIMATE Reference as to how you can become a successful Amazon Affiliate.
Benefits of Building an Amazon Affiliate Site
There are a lot of people who are discouraged with “low” commission payout by Amazon and instead get into promoting High Payout Services like Hosting Affiliate. There is nothing wrong with it. I am myself an affiliate for Hosting companies – but I make more money by promoting Amazon products.
Being an Amazon Affiliate there are advantages of choosing:
- High-Cost niche products
- High-Cost Fast Moving Products
- Low-Cost Fast-moving products.
I have been able to get my balance right so I can cross over 100$ per day threshold.
Why Amazon Affiliate Program?
- They are relatively easy to start, making it a great way to start and learn the ropes of internet marketing
- They have a clear path from creation to profit
- The Amazon “cookie” allows you to gain income from other products besides the one you’re promoting
- Amazon already has built in authority, so there’s less “selling” on your end
- There are lots of opportunities if you choose the right product
- Review posts can get good traffic and are relatively easy to create
- These sites can be easy to scale if you pick the right niche
- Can make good money in the long-term
That being said, there are also some disadvantages to setting up an Amazon affiliate website that you might want to be aware of.
- Amazon commissions are often lower than other affiliate programs
- Creating review-oriented content can get quite repetitive over time (you are competing with other bloggers too)
- Link building and ranking does take time and energy, there are chances that you can miss events or exclusive offers by Amazon.
- Today Amazon niche sites need to be planned effectively in order to last for the long-term
Passion – The Most Essential Ingredient to be successful
You will only be successful, if you are passionate about something. As affiliate marketing can test your patience – passion will be only thing that will keep you on. For instance, when I was setting up my business, I used to spend each extra minute of my time, writing notes, doing research or even skipping lunch just to do that extra research. What drove me to walk that extra mile was my passion.
The best part of being an associate with Amazon is that – it can be any niche that you have a passion there will be products and market for the same. I was talking to someone who was passionate about travel & outdoor living. There were a ton of products that he could promote while he was
How to Choose the Right Niche?
Finding the right niche is the most important part of building a blog that often gets overlooked. If you pick a niche with too much competition, your blog will get beaten down by high authority websites. If you pick a smaller niche with no demand, your blog will barely make an impact. You need to find a niche that’s in the middle and a niche that can also be monetized easily. Source: Entrepreneur
For ANY online business to work, you need two primary things:
1. Targeted Traffic
What most people forget is that traffic that serves your niche will convert. Never aim to just to get traffic – but TARGETED traffic. We have been working with a Women Fashion company. They have low traffic, but with high conversion. The focal point was targetting.
According to SellerMetrics, developer of Amazon PPC tool, too much competition for your product might hurt, so if it’s at all possible, try to offer products with less competition.
Sources of Traffic
- Social Media
When you are developing content for your site – it is better to focus on articles that will help people to convert. For instance, too many “How-To” will get you a ton of traffic, but will not convert as they are more informational rather than conversion. If you have articles like “Apple iPhone X vs Samsung Galaxy s10” – this will help you to convert faster as within the sales cycle, client is about to decide which phone is better.
What is important is that your website should be positioned just a step before the purchase decision. The amount of traffic will depend on your niche; sometimes you will not need a lot of traffic to be successful.
Sale Price of The Products
What most newbies get carried away is that they look for Fast-Moving or Low-Cost Items. You need to remember that Amazon Affiliate is a commission model i.e. you get percentage per sale. Which means if you are promoting 1$ to 5$ worth of products your commission will be pretty low. But, if you choose a fast moving products like Mobile phone, you need to be certain where you are in sales cycle. If your blog is not able to convert those to sales but a coupon site, the coupon site will earn the commission and not you. Also, when it comes to items like mobile phones, there is too much of competition for you get any sensible organic traffic with a lower SEO Budget.
Which means that you need to choose a niche that is high priced but fewer or low competition in order for you to rank faster. Items that have a higher price point, like high end appliances, furniture, BBQs, blenders and juicers, or bikes can net you over $50 a sale at least.
Remember, the Amazon cookie stays active for 24 hours. So, you’ll receive an affiliate commission for any products that are bought during that time period.
Am I in the Right Niche? Verify Your Niche
Like every business, it is always better to ensure that the Niche that you choose is feasible. It shouldn’t happen that either the competitions is too tough or there is no traffic to sustain your website or your efforts. It’s always important to find that Goldilocks to ensure that you are profitable.
One of the BEST tools that I have found is Google Trends. Navigate to Google trends and enter your keywords. For sake of this article we use “photography equipment” as a niche.
By typing “Digital SLR” we get insight into trends and also when we scroll down to related topics we can know which products/brands we can focus onto.
What Google trends will show as to what people are searching for, which products are giving a breakout. Which products are not having any search? This is the best way to know what is happening. I use this tool a lot.
Based on the Google trend, check out the prices on Amazon for the same product.
If you are doing a very expensive product, most of the searches will be related to information on the products i.e. decision. Amazon, commission will only be earned if you have the last active cookies within 24Hrs. Hence, the choice of niche should be where the decision making process is shorter and faster.
Google Keyword Planner
Once we have figured out the niche, you need to focus on. What you are really interested in? You need to get started with related keywords and volumes. This will give you an idea as to how much is the competition out there. Highly competitive niche means it will be more expensive for you to rank your site and thus your inorganic marketing ie CPC will be much higher.
Generally, I use Google Keywords Planner (a feature within Google Ads). enter your keywords in this case “Digital SLR”
This will give you an idea of the search volume each keyword is getting per month. The keyword volume isn’t incredibly important. We just want to make sure there’s a decent enough volume to translate into at least a few sales a month.
As you can see we now have a number of keywords we can investigate to see the competition level of each product. All of the keywords in this market have a great search volume for the kind of site we’re building.
Take some of the product name keywords and input them into the Google search bar. For this
After we skip the shopping sites like Amazon – we click on the first review site and we run the URL in backlinks checkers like Moz, or Majestic SEO. It will give us a fairly good idea as to how quickly will your SEO can outdo your competition.
We’re looking for a site that has a low number of backlinks from non-relevant sources. The more backlinks the site has the harder it’s going to be to outrank. To analyze the backlink profile of the site, use a tool like MajesticSEO.
Continue to repeat this process for your product keywords, so you can ensure you’ll have a series of products you can begin promoting that have a relatively low level of competition.
